Our Fish Portion Guide: How Much Fish Per Portion?

The NHS recommends eating 2 portions of fish a week, including one oily portion, but how many grams is a portion of fish? Whether you’re planning for a party or just trying to fit more seafood into your diet, our guide will help you figure out how much fish you need to buy per portion. We’ve even made a helpful chart to save you the math!

On average, a portion of fish is considered to be about 140g, however this might vary depending on the type of seafood, how it will be prepared, and what your dietary needs are.

Fish portion size

Cod portion size: Our cod portions are 150 grams each. When buying cod as a loin or fillet, 500g will be suitable for 1-3 people, and 1kg for 4-6 people.

Haddock portion size: Our haddock portions are 150g each. When buying haddock as a loin or fillet, 500g will be suitable for 1-3 people, and 1kg for 4-6 people.

Halibut portion size: Our halibut portions are 150g each.When buying a halibut fillet, 500g will be suitable for 1-3 people, and 1kg for 4-6 people.

Monkfish portion size: For a fillet, we recommend a 150g monkfish portion size per person. This means that a 500g package of fillets will be suitable for 1-3 people, and 1kg for 4-6 people.

Salmon portion size: Our salmon portions are between 120 and 140 grams, depending on whether you would like the skin on or off. When buying a fillet, the 500g option should feed up to 4 people, while you’ll need 1kg for 5 or 6 people.

Sea bass portion size: Our whole sea bass are 400g and will serve one person. For a fillet, we recommend 110g per person.

Swordfish portion size: Our swordfish supremes are 150g each. One supreme will serve one person.

Tuna portion size: Our tuna loin steaks are 150g each. One steak will serve one person.

H2: Shellfish portion size

Shellfish portion sizes vary a lot depending on how the shellfish has been prepared and whether you will be serving it as a starter or a main. We have given suggestions for main course portion sizes. If you’re planning a starter, just divide these numbers in half.

Mussels portion size: We recommend 500g of shell on mussels per person, or 150g of mussel meat per person. Both our 320g package of mussel meat and our 1kg package of shell-on mussels will feed two people.

Prawns portion size: For peeled, headless prawns aim for about a 150g prawns portion per person. For shell on prawns plan for between 300 and 500g per person.

Scallop portion size: We recommend about 170g of scallops per person. Our 750g package of scallops will feed four people as a main course and eight as a starter.

Planning your fish portions with whole fish

If you don’t want pre-portioned cuts of fish, we also offer full fillets, loins, and even whole fish. Most of our fillets and loins are available in 500g or 1kg parcels. The size of your seafood portions might vary depending on your appetite, diet, or the recipe you are following. However, the chart below is a good place to get started. On average, for 3 people or fewer 500g of fish will be enough, while for 4-6 people you’ll probably need the 1kg option.
